Time after time: an Interactive Website for patients with prostate cancer
Few chronic diseases are as fraught with uncertainty as localized prostate cancer. There is no clear optimal treatment for the disease, and all treatments cause serious side-effects. Faced with fundamental disagreement among experts about a best treatment course, patients must assume a greater role in their care decisions—with little reliable data to guide them.
The Center has partnered with a premier game design firm, ArchImage, to develop an interactive, web-based program that allows patients to simulate different treatment scenarios—at home and with their families. The interactive website is designed to change the decision-making process for patients with localized prostate cancer from a bewildering, isolating process into a customized, patient-controlled experience. Focused on expanding the user's knowledge on both the short and long term side effects of prostate cancer treatments, the website works as a primer for an enhanced, better informed discussion between the patient and his physician. Additional communication with family, friends, and other prostate cancer patients is also supported and encouraged.
Website development is guided by two advisory boards—a panel of medical experts and an upcoming focus group study of prostate cancer survivors. Center members who would like to experience the website may email
