Symposium & Workshop
on Info-Gap Applications

in the Life Sciences
September 11 - September 15, 2006
Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

The Workshop and Symposium
This workshop, the second in a series, was designed to facilitate the interaction of international researchers who have been developing info-gap applications in the life sciences.

The first workshop, which focused upon engineering applications, gave researchers from all over the world the opportunity to interact with others who shared their interest in info-gap decision theory. This meeting extended that workshop model to info-gap research in the life sciences. Researchers who are united by their interest in applying info-gap decision theory in the life sciences came together to discuss their ideas, share their work, and reflect upon future challenges.
They were joined by selected participants who are currently working in medicine, biology, and other life sciences. They provided "from the field" perspectives on the potential for application of info-gap theory in their work.

The Structure of the Workshop and the Symposium
The workshop and the symposium ran in tandem. The symposium was held in two parts: a talk and in-depth discussion at the opening of the meeting, and a public lecture at the close of the meeting. The workshop entailed a five-day technical workshop held between the two symposium talks. The workshop focused on problem solving in the life sciences with info-gap theory, including decision making in clinical situations with emphasis on clinical guidelines. The latter was part of the Center's ongoing Evidence Symposium. Further details on the structure of the workshop are found here.

The Setting
The workshop was held in the Texas Medical Center, and was hosted by the Abramson Center for the Future of Health, a collaboration of the University of Houston College of Technology, The Methodist Hospital, and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
